Mike Boschen

Trombone

Mike Boschen began playing the trombone in fourth grade because his arms were long enough to reach all of the positions. After studying with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra during high school, he decided to pursue a career in music. While attending the Eastman School of Music, Mike joined a funk band that would regularly make the 7 hour trip from Rochester to New York City and play gigs in the Village. He fell in love with New York and the idea of playing many styles of music, so he decided to move there. Mike earned his Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School, and embarked on a freelance career.

Mike has enjoyed playing a wide variety of music with groups as diverse as the Metropolitan Opera, Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Lukes, Orpheus, Toshiko Akioshi Jazz Orchestra, NYC Ballet, Jesus H. Christ and the Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse, Birdland Big Band, Mostly Mozart Festival, NY Pops, Extension Ensemble brass quintet, movie scores, commercials for radio and television, Broadway shows, rock bands, funk bands, latin bands, and contemporary ensembles. Mike loves working with young musicians, and served on the Juilliard Pre College faculty for four years, as well as the Bar Harbor Brass Week and Sarah Lawrence College.

In 2008, Mike quit all his gigs to leave NYC and travel the U.S. for a year with his wife Nicole and baby daughter to do research for a book project about love, marriage, and healthy relationships. Mike and Nicole interviewed 50 couples in 50 states married 50 years or more, and learned many lifetimes’ worth of helpful information they look forward to sharing in their book, “50 States of Love,” which they are still working on. Mike and Nicole then settled in Cape May, NJ and continued to grow their family, adding two more adorable little girls over the next few years. They also started a homemade organic ice cream shop called Bliss, creating insanely delicious super premium ice cream completely from scratch. Mike is thrilled to be back in NYC playing the Broadway show Matilda, loves spending time with his wife and girls, and enjoys being out on any golf course, anytime.
